The University of Toronto (UoT) is among the world’s most prestigious universities. Founded in 1827, it offers over 700 undergraduate degree and 200 postgraduate degree programmes to a cohort of almost 60,000 students. With a longstanding reputation for innovation and research, UoT was the birthplace of such ground-breaking scientific moments as the discovery of insulin and stem cell research, and the invention of the electron microscope. UM boasts a strong faculty team comprised of over 560 scholars recruited from around the world, around 20 of whom hold the position of chair professor or distinguished professor.The university’s faculty members are grouped under seven faculties, one institute, and one Honours College. They are the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, and Honours College. UM’s Centre for Teaching and Learning Enhancement organises workshops and training courses on a regular basis so that faculty members can share teaching experience, learn from one another, and improve their teaching pedagogies. Striving for research excellence, the university has progressed quickly in recent years. In 2010, the university received approval from the Ministry of Science and Technology for establishing two state key laboratories, in microelectronics, and Chinese medicine, respectively. At the 61stInternational Solid-State Circuits Conference of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, which is considered the ‘Chip Olympics’, UM was ranked among the top ten universities that had presented the most papers at the conference. In some areas, such as traditional Chinese medicine, and the Internet of Things, UM already ranks among the top in the Greater China region in terms of papers published at major international conferences and in prestigious journals. The number of research papers by UM members published in prestigious journals increased from 127 in 2008 to 961 in 2015.Internal funding from the university’s Research Committee and various external sources of funding, as well as the state-of-the-art new campus, combine to create ideal conditions for faculty members to carry out quality teaching and innovative research.
